Same old song.

Sound Mirrors is a Millennium Dome of a dance album, a genre-hopping guest-spinning record promising width and depth, but winding up as ill-conceived as the real thing. The woeful Everything Is Under Control wastes Jon Spencer on a dirge, while it abounds with portentous, haranguing poetry on Mr Nichols and Aid Dealer. Coldcut work best aiming for beauty over brain; leftfield folkies John Matthias and Fog making sterling contributions, while the Roots Manuva collabo succeeds with a simple string sample. But their first LP in eight years features an excess of accumulated ingredients with predictably indigestible results.

Steve Yates 26 January 05 rating of 2 and 1/2

Has anyone seen the video to True Skool, it is a really cool video, I love all the animation. However the chorus section seems to be a RIP OFF the latest jehst video - Nukeproof Suit and doesn't fit with the rest of the video very well.
The Jehst video is obviously done on a smaller budget but is much funnier. Check out http://www.thebetabrothers.com/... or http://videos.antville.org/stories/1301538/...

What do you rekon rip off or chance?

I went to see Coldcut live at Shepherds Bush Empire on Saturday, and all I can say is that it was a waste of money. The best tracks on the show were the oldies, "Timber" and "Atomic Moog 3000", the rest was majorly painful to listen to. Roots Manuva seemed he had spent the night smoking weed, he couldn't stop himself from laughing, and Jon Spencer needs some singing lessons, even I can scream like he did on stage. I almost walked out before the encore, but I was still hoping for something unexpectedly good... that didn't happen.

I haven't actually listen to the new album yet, but as a long time fan of Coldcut something tells me I should avoid it like the plague.

I was suprised how much I liked it... Although I was a big fan of their journeyīs by dj mix eons ago, and I have a lot of respect for the ninja tune label; Coldcut never over impressed me! I wasnīt much of a fan of their last record, to be honest.
This oneīs different for sure, but itīs got some interesting stuff on it, and after a few listens Iīm warming to it.
Certainly I think thereīs too much hype around it, and itīs very difficult for anything to live up to that.

i'm on the positive side of this argie. as mentioned below, the album is more song orientated. i reckon this is a good move, and one that will prove to be beneficial over time. the lp is longer lasting as opposed to cheap-n-fast dance thrills.

the re-edited version is far better than the original version, they have paced the album far better. so if people are judging on the review version then get to hear the final version, its far more solid as a complete album.

Kingsley...

I remember that first review well as I wholeheartedly agreed and chuckled out loud! Despite what I've said, I still want to catch them on their forthcoming tour - somewhere deep inside I think I've forgiven them for Sound Mirrors. Maybe. How fickle we are...!

I just sorted out work experience with iDJ in May, as it happens. Watch out! x

Sarah - iDJ yes. In fact it was in iDJs pages where I panned the first single from the Sound Mirrors album as, "a horror of stuttered samples, iffy scratches, and Mike Ladd on questionable form as a Chuck D impersonator." Not two months later waxed lyrical about the second single, "Weathered with success, and informed by the katana sharp A&R of their Ninja Tune imprint."

I didn't review the LP at the magazine, but it did make album of the month with a full cover story.

Critics, eh? Who'd have us?

Kingsley - Totally agree with your last point. Dabbling in new styles is commendable fo' sure! I think I just felt the album was too mixed and perhaps wandered a bit too far from dance music (by which I mean music-you-can-dance-to) for my liking.

By the way, recognise your name... iDJ?

Arnofio - Pleased to have found someone else who agrees, I keep on reading shining reviews of this and wondering whether I've lost the plot or missed something...

I agree with you entirely sarah. I was expecting something far more upbeat & dancey. I have to admit, I find it a bit, well, ermm, dull sadface
