The blurb on the video cover says that Medem is the
European answer to Lynch. Well, for my money, Medem is the more consistent, more exciting, and more cinematically proficient film maker. Tierra has some parallels to the recent Mulholland Drive (especially with its female characters) but, even though it is not one of Medem's best, I find it more complete, more engaging, and far more profound than Lynch's rather stitched together effort. Medem has his faults, but I really feel that he is one of the best directors around at the moment. Tierra is a parable on life and death with a protagonist who thinks he's half alive and half dead: half man and half angel. He visits a region of red earth where a plague of woodlice have turned the wine earthy, and where people and sheep get struck by lightening. The narrative is oblique and unresolved, while the cinematography is stunning. As I say, Tierra is not Medem's best, but it is still an astonishing film.
