Feline groovy. For Cat Power’s seventh album she returns to Memphis for a collaboration with musicians from the southern city’s 70s soul heyday. Featuring Teenie and Flick Hodges (from Willie Mitchell’s Hi Studios) and Stax’s Steve Potts, The Greatest nonetheless resists the temptation of an ersatz R&B revival, delivering a textbook lesson in sublime but understated country soul. Songs like Lived In Bars and After It All ooze rumpled observational songwriting, while the brilliant closer, Love And Communication, gets as close to soaring as Power’s husky whisper allows. Cat Power - The Greatest, released 23 January 06 on Matador.
