This week, Matt tunes in and finds soul.
Radio 4 – Dance To The Underground (City Slang)
The second single lifted from the New Yorkers’ second album Gotham! and a corker it is too. A throbbing bass groove with Clash-esque guitars - it’s punk you can dance to. All the way to the Underground and anywhere else you care to. Their dance leanings are also demonstrated by the three remixes that back the single, including one from Playground.
Primal Scream – Autobahn 66 (Columbia)
Taken from the album Evil Heat that gives little in the way of hints as to how long the Scream have been around, embracing as it does the finer points of electro culture. This is one of the more blissed out tracks, a bit like Moby only with more soul. Quite a lot more soul really.
McAlmont & Butler – Bring It Back (Chrysalis)
Another swell of 60s soul from Lambert and Butler. Definitely poptastic, but Bernie and Dave do pull this sort thing off with a certain amount of aplomb. Butler’s production gives it that extra spit and polish that lifts it from potentially crap to alright.
The Streets – Don’t Mug Yourself (679)
Another track from urban poet Mike Skinner’s album Original Pirate Material. An alternative title could be Mike’s Lady Tips: “You can’t stop thinking of her but don’t mug yourself.” It's gritty and real, and comes with a new mix of Weak Becomes Heroes by everyone’s favourite Norwegians, Röyksopp. It's the same lyrics, with different music. But then the music was never Skinners’s strong point. Matt Walton 24 October 02
