Ninja Tune’s jazz ensemble are jamming in a town near you. Jason Swinscoe’s Cinematic Orchestra released their second LP, Everyday, back in May. It was rather good, featuring the vocal talents of Fontella Bass (best known for Rescue Me) and Roots Manuva. Now, after a number of festival appearances, over the summer (including Homelands and The Big Chill) they’re embarking on a full UK tour. Jason started out by constructing tracks out of samples but soon began to introduce real musicians to play parts live. Now he mainly uses a full band and works closely with Phil Frances, the band’s bass player, in developing the music. “I suppose I’m like a director,” he says. “I see it in the context of how a film works. I’m the director and Phil is like the producer. The band are the cast.” So what can we expect live? “It depends on the gig we’re doing,” he ponders. “In a standing venue we play much more uptempo stuff. In a seated venue there’s much more space to play with sound and texture. It always varies.” So get in there and book a ticket. MW 03 October 02
