The Pang brothers see no evil with their second feature. Thailand’s favourite filmmaking twins, Danny and Oxide Pang follow up their hitman debut Bangkok Dangerous, which featured a gun-toting deaf mute, with an ultra-creepy tale about blindness. Or, rather, the lack of it. Mun (Taiwanese chanteuse Angelica Lee) has been sightless since she was a toddler. Now, in her 20s, she’s been given a cornea transplant and can’t wait to see the world. Sadly, when she peels off the bandages she can see about as well as George Best after a wine-tasting session. And it gets worse. When her vision finally clears, she starts seeing ghosts. Now that’s what I call bad luck. Ironically, for a film about blindness, it’s what you don’t see that makes you scared, and The Eye gets spookier by the minute. A big hit in its native Thailand, Tom Cruise’s production company has already bought the American rights. Watch out for the climax (and try not to cover your eyes). JC 26 September 02 The Eye, on national release 27 September 02.
