super furry animals
by: currybet  Thursday 19 September 2002
Super Furry Animals are perhaps the finest of recent Welsh musical exports, with a powerful mix of harmonies, guitars and technology.

The ambition of the band was demonstrated last year when they became the first band to release an album simultaneously on CD and DVD - the DVD featuring an albums worth of remixes, bonus tracks, and a video for every tune. A website specifically for the album can be found at http://www.ringsaroundtheworld.co.uk/... [requires Flash] - and there is a news story about the ground-breaking release http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/reviews/1...

This was preceded by Mwng, a low-key album released on their own label, recorded entirely in their native Cymraeg. The album had its own website which features translations of the lyrics amongst other goodies. http://www.mwng.co.uk/...

Earlier work included the "Guerrilla" album, which had the distinction of having its best track 'hidden' at the start of the CD - you have to press play, then rewind the CD for around 5 minutes in order to hear 'Citizens Band'.

Their sleeve designs have been as innovative as their music, and they have worked closely with designer, model maker, and all round good egg Peter Fowler. His website - http://www.monsterism.net/... - is a masterpiece of flash animation.

Live the band are superb, particularly when playing crowd favourite, the Steely Dan sampling "Man Don't Give F**k". They generally play with a quadraphonic sound set-up, making them a pretty unique show to witness. In the past the Super Furries have finished gigs dressed up in life-size costumes of some of Pete Fowlers monsters (which you can make on his site http://www.monsterism.net/monster.html)... . On other occasions they have staged mock wrestling bouts. They generally finish live shows with a 10 minute techno onslaught based around a sample of Arnie muttering "best mindf**k yet", an excellent alternative to the usual half-hearted greatest hits run through offered by most bands.

Elsewhere on the BBCi site there is a live chat with the band from July 2001 at http://www.bbc.co.uk/communicate/archive/super_fur...

Over on h2g2 there is also an SFA fan club - http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A703694...
