New improved fear available in a front room near you. If you like giving yourself the creeps in the comfort of your own living room, the new, improved Resident Evil on Nintendo GameCube is for you. The original was released on PlayStation in 1996. Influenced by the zombie horror of George A Romero, Resident Evil was the video game that consolidated the “survival horror” genre. Creator Shinji Mikami’s masterpiece immersed players in a horrific world of a classically scary isolated mansion, hordes of zombies desperate to chomp on your flesh and corporate biotechnology experiments gone awry. This new Resident Evil is essentially a remake, a redux. But whereas the PSOne title now looks clunky, 2002’s RE looks magnificent, taking full advantage of GameCube’s power to render imagery with immaculate detail be it shadows or rotten flesh. The GameCube version even significantly improves on the look of the sequels that appeared on Dreamcast and PS2 over the intervening years. There are new features too. And, more importantly, new nasties. DE 12 September 02
