the evening session

Indie safe haven, the Evening Session is axed. But what will replace it?

Last week Radio 1 announced it was axing the alternative music staple the Evening Session to an outcry in the music press, notably the NME. The show will end its 11-year run in December and be replaced by a "more broadly focused" music show without Steve Lamacq, who'll continue to present Lamacq Live.

So what does this mean for alternative music radio and the direction of Radio 1 as a station? Does a more broadly focused show mean they'll offer a more eclectic mix of alternative dance and guitar music? Or just more pop pap and bland R&B which currently dominates the daytime schedule? If this is the case, where will fans of indie music turn, since commercial radio also fails to cater for such an audience (unless you live in London and can pick up XFM).

Basically it's a case of wait and see. A statement by the station's press officer said, "The slots will be filled by brand new shows and presenters, which we're really excited about." So, until we know, we'd like to hear your suggestions for Radio 1. What would you like to see in Steve Lamacq's place? MW 05 September 02

Tell what you think should replace the Evening Session.
