More smokers delights, this time with vocals. George Evelyn, the man behind Nightmares On Wax has been a Warp artist for 13 years. His music's come a long way in that time; not that it wasn't good at the beginning. But back in the rave era, bleepy dance was the order of the day and his Dextrous and Aftermath singles were huge. After the split with partner Kevin Harper, Evelyn began slowing the tempo, applying his dance know-how to his musical roots of soul and hip-hop. Three albums later, and still on Warp, he's built a reputation for laid-back hip-hop grooves laced with blissful strings and funky samples. 1995's Smoker's Delight was the proper chillout album of the time and the follow up, Car Boot Soul, was equally popular with those in the know. Mind Elevation starts where those albums left off; the first track is an instantly recognisable blissed-out hip-hop groove. But George has developed his sound, working with vocalists and live musicians properly for the first time. The tracks have a bit more to them as a result and the collaborations with soul singer Chyna B on the single Know My Name and Environment have definite R&B crossover potential - if that's a good thing. Not particularly exciting, but it might just put a grin on your face. AL 29 August 02 Mind Elevation, released 02 September 02 on Warp.
