While Steve Christian was having a baby, Mark Rae had one of his own.Listen to Mark Rae audio feature.
This is an album for those who were disappointed by Rae & Christian's last album, Sleepwalking. It's for those who thought it was a bit too polished, a bit too bland R&B and, frankly, a little bit crap.
Rae Road is Mark Rae's debut album. As label boss of Grand Central (Aim, Fingathing, Only Child) and one half of Rae & Christian, he's a statesman in the world of British hip-hop, soul and innovative alternative music. He describes the solo album as "something he was always going to do" and a chance to realise his own ideas outside his prolific partnership - the pair have released over 400 pieces of music, including remixes.
Featuring some old chums like the Northern Soul vocalist Veba, and some members of the Rae & Christian band, the album is a homely mish-mash of styles. It's also much more raw than Sleepwalking and all the better for it. An interesting, if not extraordinary album. MW 29 August 02
