46 diverse tracks fused together in 62 minutes. Now that's entertainment. 2 Many DJs are Belgian brothers Steven and David Dewaele, better known as the guitar band Soulwax. On the side they do a bit of DJing and have ended up with regular slot on Belgium's equivalent to Radio 1. Rather than just beat-mix one track into the next, they created a cut and paste musical collage. It's taken them three years to persuade PIAS to let them put out a compilation album recreating what they do on radio. A total of 187 tracks were considered, forty-five different record companies were contacted and approval for 114 tracks was gained. It's not a mix for the faint hearted, it's pretty full on, including snippets from Salt n Pepper, Basement Jaxx, Destiny's Child and the Velvet Underground, which should give you some idea of how eclectic it is. Despite making an album you wouldn't listen to often, Soulwax's achievement is that they've created a whole by borrowing bits from many musical genres and blending them so intelligently that you struggle to hear the joins. Who would have thought that Dolly Parton would blend seamlessly into Royksopp? MW 31 May 02 2 Many DJs is out now on PIAS Recordings
