McAlmont and Butler - Falling (Chrysalis)
The ex-Suede guitarist and the camp falsetto singer carry on where they left off with a revamp of Yes. But that's no bad thing. Bernie and Dave have patched up their differences since their fall out in 1995 which resulted in a top-notch singles and B-sides collection rather than a proper album, and are back with more vast, 60s-esque, majestic soul. Falling precedes their new album Bring It Back, released on 12 August.
Dr Rubberfunk - Step On It (GPS Recordings)
Sublime dancefloor jazz from Dr Rubberfunk. A cut-and-paste funkathon which out-Mr-Scruffs Mr Scruff. It's like St Germain on speed with double-bass grooves, brass and breaks and some geezer whistling on it...
Dr. Rubberfunk and Justine from MASS
M.A.S.S. - Hey Gravity (Radiate)
The Strokes-a-like debut single from MASS, new signings to Haven's label Radiate records. Centred around the distinctive, sandpapered vocal of frontlady Justine (think Blondie and Robert Plant's lovechild), they fit snugly into the punk rock scene alongside the likes of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Music. They've also got a Norwegian bass player, so they must be cool.
Blue States - Metro Sound (XL)
Recently signed to XL, Blue States herald their second album Man Mountain (out 19 August) with Metro Sound, more drifting widescreen electronica. With real instruments and organic production it's a bit like a Zero 7 or Beta Band instrumental. The single contains a distinctive remix from the en vogue Four Tet (listen to that drumming) and a non-album track.
