ben human 'go human not ape'

Ex-acid jazz man's solo debut goes all funky-house with mixed results.

Go Human Not Ape is the first album from Ben Addison since the break up of his successful early nineties acid jazz outfit Corduroy.

The band split soon after Ben's interest in using computers and samplers was re-kindled whilst working with top producer Rob Playford (Moving Shadow) on Corduroy's fifth album Click. 'This for me was very inspirational and made certain ideas for the album obsolete. More interested in instrumentals now, I was very keen on making different arrangements and for the tunes to be longer'.

On Go Human Not Ape Ben combines his jazz funk know how with new-found dance production techniques to create a series of bouncy tunes littered with flutes, brass and vocal samples. The housy drums are intricate, the bass lines funky and there are good grooves at times, but where Ettienne de Crecy or Ian Pooley get kitsch-funky and retro-sleazy this sounds a bit, well, cheesy. Fun but flawed. AL 13 June 02
