background
Grand Central Records was started in 1995 by Mark Rae, owner of Manchester record shop Fat City Records. He discovered many of the label's artists searching for tracks in his shop, including Aim, Mark's first signing. After 70 releases - including the Central Heating compilations, and albums from Rae & Christian, Aim and Fingathing - the label is developing from its hip-hop roots, with albums on the way from new artists such as Kate Rogers, Niko and Mark's own first solo abum. So what makes Grand Central so special? "We develop artists over a long period of time. They grow in an organic way," says Mark. "There's not that pressure to become pop music so it has an earthy organicness to it."

gilles peterson on grand central
"There's always a good thing been happening in Manchester and that's still true now. With people like Grand Central making a real good scene there that isn't necessarily based around house music, but more on the alternative side of things, introducing artists like Fingathing and Riton. And Rae & Christian have been making some really solid, great music for many years now. Mark Rae's new single is really good. It's one of the few really good labels in the UK at the moment pushing domestic product. I've got a lot of respect for them and labels like Twisted Nerve."

coming up
Mark Rae's debut solo album Rae Road, out September 2001.

Solo album from new signing Kate Rogers who has featured on both of Aim's albums in 'Sail' and 'The Girl Who Fell Through The Ice' on Hinterland.

At 21, Niko, hailing from Brooklyn NYC, has recently signed to Grand Central and has begun recording her own soul-jazz debut, out May 2003. You may have seen her touring with Aim.

FunkyFreshFew, founding members of the GC sound, are working on their debut album, out September 2003.

Expect a third album from Rae & Christian in June 2003.

Riton follows his critically acclaimed debut album Beats Du Jour with a second album in November 2003.

Expect a super third Grand Central compilation in the Central Heating series in 2003.
