Trevor Jackson serves up a sordid selection of electro-funk.

Trevor Jackson's a bit of a player by all accounts. He started out doing record sleeves for acts like Eric B and Rakim, and Stereo MCs in the early eighties, then moved on to produce revered UK hip hop act The Brotherhood and remix people like Massive Attack and U2 as The Underdog. More recently he's been producing and DJing as Playgroup and released a most excellent album of the same name in October 2001.

He's done a good job for the pretty reliable DJ Kicks series too. 24 tracks of gutsy, raw, electronic music from a diverse selection of producers. Maurice Fulton, Metro Area and KC Flightt provide the highlights alongside Trevor's own 'electroclash' rework of Depeche Mode's Behind the Wheel. Only the Human League's Do Or Die Dub is truly cringe-worthy.

It's in-your-face music for headphones and urban landscapes. The perfect antidote to dinner-party soundtracks from the likes of previous DJ Kickers Kruder and Dorfmeister. But perhaps not quite as good. AL 05 July 02 See track list
