tastemaker poll 2006
tastemaker poll 2006
We asked our favourite music tastemakers to tell us what they’re excited about…

Paul Epworth
Producer, Bloc Party, Futureheads, The Rakes

How do you see new music developing in 2006?
I'm hoping someone will make a record with the correct balance of pop sensibilities and avant-garde oddness, like the first Deus record, or Jon Spencer Blues Explosion’s Orange. I've got a hunch that some of the go-go stuff like Troublefunk and Chuck Brown will begin to make a comeback. I also think that a lot of kids in the UK are going to go back to soulful roots. We might see an aggressive take on Northern Soul emerge. It also seems to me that because we've listened to a lot of minimal sounding stuff over the past few years we might see a return to some Trevor Horn-style production excess, and even a couple of guitar solos. Maybe.

Karl Hyde
Artist, Underworld

What are you most excited about working on in 2006?
Finishing the film score to Anthony Minghella’s new film, Breaking And Entering; getting back to webcasting our radio shows (via www.dirty.org); jamming with Rick for more Underworld releases; jamming with the other Tomatoes (mostly via the internet); releasing the new book collaboration with Rick and John Warwicker; and exploring different ways of playing live.

Which acts are you looking forward to seeing more of in 2006?
Efterklang. They’re like a live film score for the inside of your head. Very beautiful, very fragile.

How do you see new music developing in 2006?
Greater choice through webcasts, podcasts, videocasts… Consequently, more low quality work out in public, but a greater chance of finding real gems that would normally get passed over by mainstream trends. Small groups of skilled people interacting, exchanging ideas, supporting and encouraging one another.

Mat Jacob
A&R, Memphis Industries: The Go! Team, Dungen

What are you most excited about working on in 2006?
Field Music. They’re going to be releasing two albums next year. They’re the best songwriters in Britain, easily. That sounds boring. It’s not.
How do you see new music developing in 2006?
Hopefully more transnational DIY success stories. It would great to see some decent UK bands mirror the success of Arcade Fire in North America.

Kieren Hebden
Artist, Four Tet

Which music acts inspired or impressed you in 2005?
Battles. One of the live acts I saw this year really that blew my mind.
Which acts are you looking forward to seeing more of in 2006?
J Dilla was sick in hospital in 2005 but has some hot new music coming out on Stones Throw in 2006. I’m ready for the Battles debut album. I’m looking forward to Koushik’s debut too.

Gilles Peterson
Radio 1 DJ

Which music acts inspired or impressed you in 2005?
Weird producers like Maurice Fulton and labels like Kompakt and Soil and Pimp Sessions from Japan.
How do you see new music developing in 2006?
I think the Grime meets hip-hop scene will thrive, and we’ll continue to see better live shows from electronic artists.

Steve Beckett
MD, Warp Records

What are you most excited about working on in 2006?
I’m excited about our new signing of New York band Battles. They’re one of the best live acts I’ve ever seen. I saw them play in Spain this year and my body dissolved while I was watching them. Any band that makes my body dissolve I get excited about.
How do you see new music developing in 2006?
I reckon there will be a hip-house revival, Jan-March, a post-rock revival, April-June, a brief ambient revival for the summer, then death metal leading us into Christmas.

Patrick Wolf
Artist

Which acts are you looking forward to seeing more of in 2006?
Lady Sovereign. I’ve been a fan since she first started. I think she has a combination of pop, ultra progressive beats, a really dirty sense of humour and a bit of hardcore inspiration for the vegetable youth of today.
How do you see new music developing in 2006?
It would be good to see a lot of the boring corporate machismo hip-hop and rock dying out, and seeing a bit more progression, fun, anarchy and magic. And if we have to digest yet another movement of regurgitated 60s guitar bands then I’m moving to Hungary. I hear there’s a good gypsy gabba scene happening over there.

Dan Stacey
A&R, 679 Records: The Streets, Futureheads

What are you most excited about working on in 2006?
Plan B and Mystery Jets.
Most new music is so conformist and neither of these artists fit in with any scenes, so they’ve set about creating their own. Plan B presents a whole new way of thinking about hip-hop; his music and lyrics are more intense and impassioned than any other British MC I've come across, and he only needs his acoustic guitar to deliver them effectively. The Jets are the best live band I've ever seen. They're the latest in a line of classic British outsider rock acts like Radiohead, The Smiths or Pink Floyd, who all emerged on their own terms.
How do you see new music developing in 2006?
Asking anyone over the age of 21 and in the media or music industry this question is pointless, its kids in their bedrooms or rehearsal spaces up and down who will have the answers. But if you're pressing me for something then The Tissue People will take over clubland.

Jamie Lidell
Artist

What are you most excited about working on in 2006?
I'd have to say it’s my new record. I’m busy getting a new space together to do the do at the moment. Hoping it'll be ready before the full brunt of the Berlin winter kicks in. Then I’m hoping to pour a new album in time for tea.
How do you see new music developing in 2006?
I hope it's another year where the song can triumph. I hope that the people who gave up music thinking their instrument was uncool will pick it back up and blow! Getting to the core of things, communicating essential emotions of our time, and not just being force-fed a sweeter and sweeter pop bling-bling nothing pill.

Hattie Collins
Editor, RWD Magazine

Which music acts inspired or impressed you in 2005?
Brilliant albums from Statik, Kano and Roll Deep. Tracks from Skepta, JME, Jammer, Plan B, Lady Sov, Mentat, Baby Blue and Baby J, and hot mixtapes from Klashnekoff, Ears, and a new Sway album.
Which acts are you looking forward to seeing more of in 2006?
Having had sneak peeks at Wiley, Aftershock and Skepta’s albums I think that, if dealt with right, they will be next year’s success stories. Plan B will definitely be massive. Also Mizz Beats, a 17-year-old East London producer, is going to be a big name too. Watch A&Rs rush her for album tracks.
