![]() game awards 2005
The playing is over… World Of Warcraft Yes, the record-breaking MMORPG World Of Warcraft – a truly astonishing achievement in terms of scale, variety and, goddammit, addictiveness. Wow indeed. Advance Wars: Dual Strike Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2 were the reason to own a GameBoy Advance. Advance Wars: Dual Strike does the same for the DS. A huge game played out on a tiny scale and another masterpiece courtesy of one of the world's greatest franchises. Resident Evil 4 Every Resident Evil game has something to recommend it, but the formula was getting a bit familiar with all those GameCube remakes. So Capcom completely revised the franchise for Resident Evil 4, taking both the story and the control system in a fresh new direction. Clik-clik, ba-boom! Prince Of Persia: The Two Thrones Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time was a work of beauty, majesty and flawless controls. The second game, Warrior Within, was a gloomy, clichéd, over-hard shame. The third game, Prince Of Persia: The Two Thrones, almost got things back on track. Almost. God Of War Sometimes you just want to feel like a tough guy, and few this year can compete with God Of War’s Kratos in badass terms. He's dynamic, he's fearless, he's an efficient killer. He's a right bastard. And what fun it is to get into his skin. Fahrenheit Fahrenheit – what a novel game. Sure, the button-mashing got a bit daft, but this was a compelling game, visually striking and featuring a narrative that tried to push the game storytelling envelope, despite its descent from urban noir into hokey sci-fi. GTA's Hot Coffee The fuss over the San Andreas “Hot Coffee” mod. Get over it. It was an 18-certificate game anyway. F.E.A.R. Wandering around dark interiors then… yikes, as the scary little J-horror-style girl appears. Just as your heart slows down, the freaky psychic cannibal bloke pays a sudden spectral visit too. Almost enough to make you jump out of your avatar. Half Life 2: Lost Coast The Half-Life 2: Lost Coast freebie available on Valve's Steam network, just a little reminder of what was so wonderful about the full game in 2004. Roll on the Half-Life 2: Aftermath expansion due in 2006, too. Doom The Ha ha ha, yeah right. Who else was duped by the pre-release rhetoric into thinking that Andrzej Bartkowiak’s Doom would be true to the game (or true to Doom 3 specifically)? Instead, it did the classic trick of abandoning a perfectly serviceable game narrative and replacing it with twaddle. Sigh. Nintendogs Ever forget your pet for a few weeks and come back to find it hungry, thirsty, dirty and unhappy? How can a handheld game produce such feelings of guilt and affection? Those Nintendogs are just too cute. Mario Kart DS Another year, another great line-up of racers with, among the genre's highly varied offerings, another lively Burnout and the paradigm splendour of Project Gotham Racing 3 on 360. However, Mario Kart DS gets the award for its quintessential play style and miraculous online options. Darwinia A retro-looking but subtly sophisticated strategy game, Darwinia involves saving the virtual inhabitants from a viral infection of their wireframe virtual theme park. Developed by the UK-based Introversion Software, it's a pleasing reminder that not all the best games are made/published by huge corporations. Killer 7 Capcom remains one of the most innovative big-name developers, with such games as Viewtiful Joe alongside its more conventional fighters and wotnot. Killer 7 looked to be another cult classic, but, despite remarkable visuals, it was just too awkward. I wish it had been just a bit more accessible. PSP PSP Yeah, yeah, great, it's a sexy bit of kit, but where are the proper handheld games? Nintendo maintains a firm grip on the handheld hardware crown.

Anyway as a constuctive criticism, I think "Doom" the movie was rather overhyped, although who am I to speak, I haven't even seen it.

HeyI believe that quite a few things on the list are slightly overhyped, also we need a racing game on more than one format, hows about Burnout Revenge - I think it is a banging game.

I think Daniel's article at the time (linked on the games of 2005 article) summed up what I thought - after all, it was pretty much the only legal act in the entire game, and that's what caused all the fuss? And in the country with the largest adult movie industry in the world? I think it was more a publicity stunt for Hilary rather then her really being concerned about moral standards in games. I just don't see her relaxing at the end of the day with a couple of hours of San Andreas turf war. & she won't see it as a waste of Senate time - there are a lot of votes in that sort of thing, do a web search for Christian videogames or similar. There's a huge market out there. I think someone will do a more mainstream one soon that'll hit big (at least in the US).Rockstar didn't do themselves any favours though... "It's not part of the game, it's just the work of malicious hackers!" "Then how do you explain the fact that it's on the PS2 disk as well?" "Oh. Maybe we did write it after all..." Maybe it was just to boost sales in an "almost banned" way - like Manhunt. What's the betting Bully has something in early versions that causes offense and has to be removed?

GTA's Hot CoffeeKnee yerk reaction or epileptic fit? Hell for Hilary Clinton to waste Senat time rant and raving about this patch and game shows how bent some politics across the Atlantic is.

Isn't Psychonauts already out (on the PS2 anyway)? After reading this (and other end of year reviews), I picked up Killer 7 was in the sale for £15 (& I had some loyalty points to spare after buying presents). Haven't got far with it yet, but it's worth a look just for the style. I'd agree the game's more curio than classic though, it reminded me of the bits in Akira that I don't understand. But then, how many games successfully remind you of films? Most just remind you of other games... Looks like it'll temper my 360 envy for a few months though...

Kudos to you for lauding the superb games that are Darwinia and Fahrenheit. If you give Psychonauts the same type of recognition when it is finally released in the UK in Feburary I will officially love you! Or at least your taste in games. |
