When Eva discovers that Henrik has been having an affair she seeks to make him and his mistress pay. Alvetegen manages to absolutely pinpoint the thoughts of her characters. The chapters alternate between Eva and Henrik so you understand that neither one of them is blameless: differences in their personalities that they might have joked about when they first met have become fixed, ingrained - predictable. You might even sympathise with Henrik's affair. A third character, Jonas, adds the thrills to this novel. An obsessive-compulsive loner who has devoted his life to looking after his girlfriend-in-a-come. Unfortunately she is declining. As a teenager Jonas was coerced into covering for his father who'd go out drinking and womanising. His mother never recovers from being betrayed by both of the men in her life. Eva meets Jonas in a bar, and he transfers his obsession onto her, leading to an unputdownable finishing section to the book, and a genuinely creepy and unsettling end. Compared to Patricia Highsmith and Ruth Rendell this prize-winning author is well worth checking out.
