Japanese soundscapes and skeletal atmospherics. Once purveyors of three-bass-guitar ambientathons, Rothko is nowadays one Mark Beasley and his twangy guitar, while Susumu Yokota’s dreamy beats and Eno-esque textures have made him the doyen of the brainier chillout fraternity. Together, these disparate travellers in warm bath sonics seem intent on redefining the adjective “atmospheric”. Occasionally too skeletal for its own good (Deep In Mist), the album succeeds when Yokota’s silken synthetics merge seamlessly with Beasley’s otherworldly plucks and sometime singer Caroline Ross’s heavily processed vocal loops – particularly on the hypnotically lovely Water’s Edge. Susumu Yokota & Rothko - Distant Sounds Of Summer, released 07 November 05 on Lo Recordings.
