![]() webslinky: online games
This week, let’s play. Although people will tell you that PCs are for computing, researching, number crunching, writing etc, as soon as everyone’s backs are turned it’s gaming that people really want to use them for. If you’re after some free games to while away the hours, head to Shockwave’s website where you can experience vintage gaming at its height with Defender. It’s one of the best (and at the time most complicated) shoot ‘em ups made by gaming legends Williams®… and still a bugger to play, even after all these years. ID’s Doom was one of the first games to pick up a real cult following through the distribution of shareware, and the tradition continues with last year’s Doom 3, which still remains a pretty scary proposition. Head to doom3.com and register for the first level free. Mpogd.com is a good one-stop shop concentrating on multiplayer gaming. There are a lot of pay games on this site, but skinflints such as ourselves can find a few highly rated strategy games in the free section. Of course the Sudoku seems to be driving the general public insane at the moment and the internet itself is not immune. Suduko.org.uk is a good little site in that it has puzzles and also a solver programme for the impatient, and cheaters, out there. Far removed from Sudoku, Waddingtons marketed a Ouija board aimed at the children’s market in the early 70s, which was quickly banned. Visit cyclismo.org for an online version, scare yourself silly and then unplug your computer never to be used again. Too late, however, as your house is now haunted and your budgie cursed. Lastly, bring Vegas to your desktop with a selection of fruit machines at Freeslots. They’re free which means you’re not going to walk away a rich person. Nevertheless, at least you’ll have your bus fare home at the end of a session.
