![]() the brothers grimm
Lost in the woods. Terry Gilliam’s new fantasy adventure is more The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen than Brazil or Monty Python. The Brothers Grimm are two conmen (Matt Damon and Heath Ledger) whose ruse about there being monsters lurking in the shadows comes back to bite them on the arse. As ever, Gilliam refuses to do a straightforward Hollywood action movie, and while the visuals are immaculate, the storyline is sometimes confusingly inconsistent. As such, Grimm is a difficult watch but one that rewards those willing to persevere and roll with Gilliam’s beguiling intricacies. The Brothers Grimm, on national release 04 November 05.

of COURSE gilliam's convoluted and heady jumbles of moving picture preclude commercial success. people like you or I. we like Gilliam. how?!, we howl, does the world. not. recognise. his. genius?!I still remember finishing my first screening of Brazil (I haven't watched it since; policy). it fed my brain through some kind of dream-state blender and creamed it into a million different flavours. !!!!, I thought at the time, not having any other words to express my immense gratification at being exposed to that world. but that's just you or I. individuals are smart; people are stupid. no? you disagree? who's keeping McDonalds afloat then? it's certainly not me! "oh, surtr, you're SO cynical", say my friends, immediately before I push their cheery heads into their dinner plates. |
