Italian for love. With Lasse Halleström’s Casanova soon to be upon us, here’s a timely reminder as to why he needn’t have bothered. Federico Fellini’s Casanova is a colourful series of episodic escapades in the manner of La Dolce Vita which follow Casanova in his search for the meaning of love. Fellini surprised the world by casting American actor Donald Sutherland as the eponymous lothario, but it proved a stroke of genius as the director spends almost three hours mocking Casanova as a man more interested in style than substance. No wonder Don Juan got the girl.Fellini’s Casanova, out now on InD DVD.
