All hail the 80s. DM, The Pesh, Dep Mod - however the faithful refer to their electro-pop idols, one thing’s for sure: legions are wetting their rubber undies over this one. The band is revered by everybody from the lords of Detroit techno to Johnny Cash to Woolworths till girls, and everyone, that’s EVERYONE, must have a fave Depeche track. Like the fabness of Violator, this new LP has the rock, the darkness, the beauty, the weirdness and the pop. Better than Gahan’s solo trips for sure, this one is kickass.Depeche Mode – Playing the Angel, released 17 October 05 on Mute.

PTA represents the true muscles of DM creativity that spawns at least 2 dimensions: full courage ( to do it ) and full genious ( to perform it/produce it.. compose it ! )The comparisions with the past LPs might be OK but it takes some time for the music to really lay down in the head and then the conclusions can be poped up from the critical can .. ( my current opinion PTA is better than Violator ) I say that PTA is a quite a must for any electronics lover and i have been tested some people accordingly ... and they survived and guess what : they join the 25-years long DM caravan

I long for the day when we can get past the ghost of Alan Wilder. This time I think we can safely give an enthusiastic AMEN!!! "Playing the Angel" is as dark, as brooding and as lovely as Songs of Faith and Devotional, with the depth of lyrics as 1997's Mode classic, Ultra. The Basildon Boys have once again proven themselves ahead of the game! Kudos to Gahan for brilliant vocal performances throughout, and Gore stands as the band's driving force, a la "the mind behind the Mode." A fantastic album through and through...

Let's not kid ourselves by waiting for DM to make another album of the same calibre as 'Violator'. It's not going to happen, and we shouldn't expect it to happen anytime in the future. Sans Wilder, they've managed to stay afloat in the pop scene with Ultra and Exciter, though not bad albums, they lack the stellar reinvention and originality of Songs of Faith and Devotion. Nothing new with "Precious", but it's catchy, danceable, and might be their most successful comeback single post Wilder's departure. Several songs on the album are rather mopey and dark, even for your average DM fan, but other tracks are outstanding: John the Revelator, Suffer Well. With no signs of slowing down, I expect to see great live shows from them.
