This week, back from the dead. Fans of fictional zombies in the UK will be rejoicing this week as George A Romero’s fourth zombie epic, Land Of The Dead, finally reaches UK shores, fulfilling another instalment of pack-leading horror thrills that started way back in 1968 with his groundbreaking Night Of The Living Dead.Interestingly, Romero never actually refers to his undead as zombies; this was actually the work of European distributors who renamed his shopping-mall-bound epic, Zombies: Dawn Of The Dead. Interested parties can find out all about the masterpiece at The Zombie Farm, a fan site that truly is a labour of love. Of course, “real” zombies have their roots in the African “voudon” rituals that were brought by slaves to Haiti where the “what goes around comes around” foundations of the religion served them well in opposition to the Africans’ colonialist overlords. The Afrocentric Experience makes for interesting reading on that matter. For other information visit wade-davis.com, an explorer-in-residence at the National Geographic Society. His anthropological study The Serpent And The Rainbow is a fantastic book that was fictionalised by film director Wes Craven in 1988’s film of the same name. Zombie Pinups is a rather less highbrow exploration of the zombie phenomenon, where fairly coy burlesque models are photographed as the undead for an audience you probably don’t want to meet. But fear not. The Federal Vampire And Zombie Agency is a group out to inform and defend the free world from the menace of the undead. They claim Captain Cook was killed by zombies, as was scientist Louis Pasteur, of course. Finally, it’s worth checking this site dedicated to the beautiful film I Walked With A Zombie; the Jacques Tourneur-directed I Walked with a Zombie. The majesty and mystery of this Val Lewton-produced masterpiece still remains one of the most visually poetic American films ever committed to celluloid.
