Sundazed folkadelia. Resembling folk's answer to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, it would be fair to presume that Devendra Banhart is something of an acquired taste. Yet while his camp warble occasionally sounds as though he is trying to vibrate himself to a higher astral plane, his fourth album is his most accessible yet. Heard Somebody Say is sparse, sundazed folkadelia, while Cripple Crow could persuade any ear of the mystical properties of patchouli oil. Twenty-two songs long, this is nothing short of brilliant. Devendra Banhart - Cripple Crow, released 19 September 05 on XL.

also have a listen to the espers tracks...meadow is particularly good...if you can get hold of their 8 tracks album then do...also 6 organs of admittance is good, very wierd but good. im gonna pick up cripple crow tomorrow...payday!also, for the sake of context its worth having a listen to the work of pentangle, fairport convention and the incredible string band to start. you'll see banhart isnt really changing the face of music but plumbing a line most people have ignored. ive been banging on about this stuff for years and being called a hippy and its good to hear it getting raked over at last.

I was introduced to the work of Devendra Banhart just a few days ago by a friend of mine. It's a name i had heard being muttered here and there but didn't really take too much notice of. I feel as if i have been missing out here! What a great record this is!! I have bought some older works of his and they are also amazingly good - but this 'Cripple Crow' is one of those albums that change the face of modern music! If you have not checked it out - listen to it online i believe the link is on this site somewhere - If you like music - real music - then you will like this i can assure you!! |
