Scots folk with melancholic charms. If Fife’s Fence Collective are about a laudable fringe mentality, you’d never know it from this well-crafted album by Kenny Anderson. His weathered voice set against bursts of psyche-pop from The Earlies, the songs telescope the minutiae of grown-up relationships: trips to Safeway, unromantic garlic breath. True, it could all feel about as glamorous as cleaning out the garden shed, but while Anderson refuses to varnish his stripped-wood shanties, lines such as “I could have my head in my hands/You wouldn’t think to ask me” could bend any ear. King Creosote - KC Rules OK, released 05 September 05 on Names/679.

I saw King creosote at the Big Tent 2006 last weekend and thought they were excellent.Falkland palace, torrential rain, big marquee and smilie faces - perfect! I bought 12 O'clock on the dot and look forward to enjoying the rest of their albums. No wonder they say Fife is a place that you visit and then stay...Even the raspberries were sweet.

Live at The Tolbooth at the weekend there - and I was indeed set adrift by nautical tunes galore (along with my companions). There's not enough acordians in this life and - I look forward to more maritime musical adventures... |
