Bring the funk
!!! (aka chk chk chk) are a stonkingly good live band. That much we know. Not so good on record, although current single "Take Ecstasy With Me" (a Magnetic Fields song) is looking to change that.

But no one could have been prepared for just how good !!! would be tonight.

Launching in to "Ecstasy...", they spin it out to a ten minute epic, and that's nothing to what's to come.

It's hot, it's sweaty and it's very funky in here - the perfect atmosphere for seeing perhaps the best live band playing right now - if you like to dance, that is.

The new songs sound amazing, and the only old one they play is the infamous "Me and Guilliani...", which is given a thorough re-working. At one point there are four members of the band playing drums. But this is no prog-ish whig-out.

Dressed in tight nylon shorts, trousers with one leg rolled up the other down, and dirty t-shirts, they look like the ultimate 70s slackers, but their music ain't for getting stoned too. It's way too energetic for that.

Best gig of the year for me, no contest. Would have been 5/5 if they'd come back for an encore, but they don't believe in 'em.
