A national treasure. He was serious after all. The quixotic Mr Stevens keeps on truckin’ through the 50 states of the Union, pledging an album for each. After the inaugural Michigan, this is another highly personal view of neighbouring Illinois. It’s all here: local UFO spots, a portrait of serial killer John Wayne Gacy Jr and shout-outs to sleepy backwater towns (Bushnell, pop. 3,166). …Illinoise! veers between sad reflection and effervescent, almost manic joy. The title track resembles a music class run wild, with chaotic jazzy flourishes and beautiful, face-shining wonderment. Here's hoping he reins in the slight indulgences by the time he gets to Phoenix. Sufjan Stevens - Come On Feel The Illinoise!, released 04 July 05 on Rough Trade.
