Music-box intimacy from enigmatic Nordic chanteuse. Norway’s Hanne Hukkelberg has the elfin charm, and ear for a sublime tune, of Björk at her least shouty. Hukkelberg’s sound blends her cute crystalline vocals – Stina Nordenstam by way of Billie Holiday – with a kaleidoscope of subtle beats, strings, banjos and all manner of ephemeral beaten, plucked and blown things. Despite an occasional surfeit of knowing lyrical whimsy, Little Things is an accomplished and often magical album, and when Hukkelberg loosens up – as on the swooning True Love – she sounds like a Fjordland Joni Mitchell, no less. Hanne Hukkelberg - Little Things, released 27 June 05 on Leaf.
