Baker Brothers Interview.
by: Kid 73  20 june 05
Shootin' Funk From The Hip.
Playing to a hometown, sold out crowd must be a mixture of feelings for any band. The Baker Brothers were prepped and ready for The Consortium stage to celebrate their album launch and to celebrate band member and brother from another mother Chris Pedley’s birthday. Add a dash of 10 brand spanking new tracks to the plump 21-song play list for the night and you have a solid party on your hands.

I managed to catch up with the blue safari suited Chris just before he went on stage and dragged him down a back alley for a little interview.

Baker Brothers: Chris Pedley Interview.

Is this your first Interview?

No, I did one for a magazine in Japan.

Did they have any clue as to what you were saying?

Well, it lasted about two hours… they phoned me on my mobile. It turned out ok but it was a half a page. From a two hour interview!

I have asked some people about questions for you so I am just going to drop some random ones in during the conversation.

OK

The Baker Brothers are?

Dan Baker, Rich Pedley ha ha ha, Rich BAKER, CHRIS Pedley and we have some of our friends joining us tonight on percussion, trumpet and sax. Paul Young on sax.

THE Paul Young?

No, A Paul Young, but not that Paul Young, and Dave Price on trumpet and Steve Bray on percussion.

You sometimes have a lady singing with you as well.

Yeah, she’s going to be joining us tomorrow but not tonight, she is called Vanessa Freeman.

So tonight is to celebrate your launch of your new album “In with the out crowd”.

Absolutely.

Which was recorded…

At the Jazz Café, Camden in October last year.

Was it a good gig?

Shit. Absolutely crap!

Really.

But it was the best that we can do for now, so. Nah, it’s pretty good, I’m happy with it. It was our night you know, we had organised it to record and we had a really good, friendly crowd.

So when are we going to hear some new material from you guys?

Tonight.

Tonight!

Yeah 10 new tunes.

Never seen the light of day.

Exactly. Shitting myself.

The club is rammed; it’s a hometown crowd… looking forward to it?

The best thing is to play at home, you know. It’s good to see all our friends in the crowd that have supported us for years. They have seen us come quite a few steps and it’s nice to keep everyone up to date with what is going on.

It’s got to be hard with a hometown crowd with the guest list…

Don’t…the thing is, they fuckin’ ring you up whilst you are eating your dinner. Laughs. It’s like, “I gave in the guest list over two hours ago at the sound check and they’ll be pissed off if I try to put anyone else on”

So have you got to get slaughtered before you go on stage tonight?

No way mate I am completely straight. I have had a little doobie, I have had a couple of beers, a glass of wine and some red snapper at the Coriander opposite.

So you are contented, you have your two cigars in your top pocket a beer by your side and you are ready to go?

I have you here mate, I’m happy.

So all the new material is going onto an album soon.

Yeah we are recording it and mixing it and it should be out at the end of September- beginning of October on Peddler Records.

Best Kept Secret are?

Our Booking agents so anyone out there that wants to book us just call them up.

And you are up there (London) tomorrow night for their 3rd birthday party.

Exactly. We are there with Break Reform, TM Juke and 2Tall should be really good.

So in 2005 you are touring Japan, playing Glastonbury, releasing a new CD and…? More touring?

Yeah Definitely I think we are going to do a UK tour in October to go with the new album and take it from there. We are trying to get over to Europe and play some festivals. We have got a gig coming up in Paris hopefully in the autumn.

Globetrotting.

Well. It’s been a long time coming and we have worked hard and I feel like at least we’re not just bluffing our way through and we actually had to work hard to make it happen.

So how would you describe your sound?

Erm… party funk and party soul. We have a lot of different influences within our sounds, from The Rolling Stones, the Police and the Beatles, those are the obvious ones. But I love a lot of the new soul, hip-hop and reggae so I guess that is some of the influences from me. Dan and Rich come from quite a classical background, Paul or sax player is from a proper jazz band. We just get it together and write songs, whatever comes naturally.

So it’s just organic and you all chip something in, what about working with the brothers, do they outnumber you in arguments?

Well they fight loads but I think I can take them on! I really enjoy when we argue and fight about music. We all have very loud voices. It’s not really fighting it’s all very superficial but we battle it out over the music.

So do you know any vicars?

Laughs Uh… yeah there is a guy called John Wardle who is a really good vicar.

Laughing. Why did I get told to ask if you know any vicars?

Who told you?

I’m not allowed to say.

Well my friend who is here tonight is a vicar and he started going out with this bird and she doesn’t even know that he is a vicar. Laughs. He told her that he just goes to church but he really is a full time vicar.

Someone else asked me to ask you if you have ever put your own thumb up your ass?

Laughs…no just my index finger.

That about wraps it up then. Anything you want to say to anyone reading this?

Thanks for the support from everyone and get the album when it comes out.

What’s it called?

Do you want an exclusive? We haven’t got a title.

You lie!

No we haven’t got a title.

If you could call it anything what would you call it? Peddley’s album?

Shut up! I would probably call it “Bomo-phobic”
