Talent spotting at Manchester’s Cornerhouse. The first leg of Bloomberg New Contemporaries kicks off at the Cornerhouse gallery in Manchester where the work of 29 fine-art graduates is split over three floors. Much of the work looks like a weak copy of existing art. Then there are those who’ve been pricked by their political conscience, with subjects such as asylum seekers’ bedrooms, bombed out schools and earthquakes and pages from passports. I wonder if they really care about these issues or simply see them as the latest right-on thing to make art about. But within the selection there’s a pocket of original talent. For example, in his video, Boss And Dog, Craig Wilson has used blue-screen to “collage” together the entertaining story of a group of whispering Glaswegian dolls with human heads. Think Chris Cunningham’s video for Aphex Twin meets The Mighty Boosh. While Robert Orchardson’s sophisticated sculpture employs an Op-art pattern which has been “drawn” out of thin pieces of wood, the structure suspended in space like a Peter Davies/DJ Simpson hybrid. Overall, the standard is high and if you enjoy talent spotting this show is definitely worth seeing. Bloomberg New Contemporaries is at the Cornerhouse, Manchester, until 17 July 05.
