Emin goes beige at London’s White Cube.

What strikes you when you enter Tracey Emin’s new solo show is the lack of colour. Whereas three years ago the same space was filled with Lego-bright patchworks and neons, now those shades have drained away to leave a multiplicity of creams, beiges and whites.

In a way this only serves to bolster the content of her autobiographical work. There are her trademark delicate drawings and intimate, emotional patchwork pieces. To this she’s added paintings that fuse her sketchy sinewy bodies with washes of cream paint. Her exploration of sex sits with the erotic heritage of Rodin and Egon Schiele.

On the other hand, it doesn’t all work. Some sculptural installations, like a tin bathtub filled with barbed wire, disrupt the coherence of the show, and the space is arguably too rammed with objects. But behind big gob and media manipulation, Tracey Emin is an artist who can actually draw.
