Another fine mess. The most handsome man in alternative rock trots out his third solo album, delivering a thumb in the eye to the law of diminishing returns. The shambling, wink-to-camera absurdity that made Pavement so vital is tempered by Malkmus’ preternatural knack for melody and some great 70s FM rock licks, as on Baby Come On and Mama. Kindling For The Master and Pencil Rot even include some Moog-y squelches and rapping: the former a fair stab at disco, the latter a goofy jive with more of those monster riffs. All in all, just another day in the court of the clown prince. Stephen Malkmus - Face The Truth, released 23 May 05 on Domino.
