Sex music for nerd people. Tenacity is hardly the most exciting quality associated with rock’n’roll but, since forming in 1994, vocalist/guitarist Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno have shown that indie underdogs sometimes bite hard. Like a batty old medium, their fifth album, Gimme Fiction, channels a whole series of rock voices - David Bowie, Prince, The Beatles, Guided By Voices - through 11 emotionally complicated, texturally exacting songs. Neurotic, literate and oddly funky, Spoon do the grad-school shuffle with seductive style. Spoon - Gimme Fiction, released 16 May 05 on Matador.
