Kieran Hebden’s full-blown howl. For all their apparent pastoral beauty on the surface, there was always something slightly sinister lurking in the woods of Four Tet’s previous three albums. But on Everything Ecstatic those mutterings have become a full-blown howl. A cacophony of Krautrock drumming and free jazz squalling billows away behind Kieran Hebden’s evocative electronic melodies on tracks like Turtle Turtle Up. We’ve hardly been short of pale imitations of Four Tet’s sound recently, but despite that – and Hebden’s own occasional wanton obtuseness – Everything Ecstatic is still a nigh-on essential purchase. Four Tet - Everything Ecstatic, released 23 May 05 on Domino.
