The arty all-girl Brighton quartet tread water.

In contrast to The Power Out, Electrelane’s eclectic song-packed 2003 sophomore LP, Axes keeps leader Verity Susman’s vocals to a minimum and most closely resembles the band’s all-instrumental 2002 debut, Rock It To The Moon. So, while the polka-like Eight Steps sounds like it might have slipped off the last Tom Waits LP, and Business Or Otherwise nods noisily to free jazz, Axes – recorded with typically economy by Steve Albini – generally defaults to a stylish, if not exactly revolutionary, sub-Stereolab throb. Electrelane have a leftfield classic in them, but this isn’t quite it.
