Vote for Sawhney. Nitin Sawhney claims that his seventh album isn’t overtly “political” but – coming out just before the election – Philtre’s release is timely indeed. For in a climate of right-wing rhetoric about the perils of multiculturalism, Philtre is a testament to the benefits of musical miscegenation, as Sawhney cross-breeds elements from a global gene pool which includes gypsy jazz, Bengali folk and drum’n’bass. Sawhney’s beats and songwriting eschew the sledgehammer tactics of more militant firebrands like Asian Dub Foundation for a subtler approach – making Philtre an all-encompassing musical manifesto that we can all support. Nitin Sawhney – Philtre, released 02 April 05 on V2.
