Debut director Jacob Aaron Estes comes of age. A group attempt to turn the tables on a high-school bully who abuses one of their younger brothers goes badly wrong in this well observed rites-of-passage drama. The river down which the kids drift leads, as ever, to a heart of darkness, framed by the usual absence of parental figures. But Jacob Aaron Estes’ sombre tale has a genuine empathy with his young protagonists, buoyed by a sensational cast, including Brad Pitt-alike Scott Mechlowicz and yet another Culkin kid, Rory. Mean Creek, on selected release 22 April 05.
