Maastricht

A Rough Guide
I first moved to Maastricht in 1995. A trip up from Luxembourg which was rudely interupted by a leather clad politie bike rider, with a very "in your face" stop! hand signal. I dutifully obeyed, not wanting my first impression of Maastricht to be a tour of the police station. 10 minutes later i was still standing there. So i decided to get out and ask the before-mentioned "copper" what was amiss. "Amstel Gold Race" came the reply. And 10 minutes later the helicopters, 200-odd cyclists and 200+ support vehicles flew past in a cacophony of sound. "Wow cool place to live" was my first thought. Probably a good omen, and I'm still here 10 Gold races later, all of which i have watched and followed, on foot, on bike and by car.

So where is Maastricht?

Good question , as most peope I meet have no clue. "Is that Denmark?" is often a response, God knows why. Sweden, Belguim, Norway, Germany and even Switzerland have been other wild guesses. Maastricht is at the bottom of the dangly bit at the bottom of The Netherlands. The dangly bit being the province of Limburg. It has been said to me that Limburgers dont really consider themselves part of Holland but a seperate entity. I wouldn't know about that as I'm a real bloody foreigner.

A lot of people describing Maastricht's location will tell you how great it is because its 20 mins from Germany and 5 mins from Belguim, and it is true that this fact is quite a novelty, but what you gonna do when the novelty has gone?. In fact I rarely if ever venture over either of these borders. In fact Maastricht's location is a bit of a pain rather than a bonus. Its miles from any decent major city, so long trips to any decent days out. Travel links are poor. Rail into belgium you can enjoy a 2-3 hour trip on a rickety old train and share your carriage with a load of junckies who look like they are evaluating your luggage inbetween drags of their maastricht purchased spliffs.

One of Maastrichts less marketed tourism attractions "the spliff'. As in the rest of Holland (not just Amsterdam) Coffee shops sell a variety of relaxing herbal weeds for your pleasure. This of course attracts a lot of 'drug tourists' from Germany Belgium and France as Maastricht is the closet Dutch City.
