Irish brothers unleash their inner Californians. Laid-back, harmony-rich and more West Coast than a pink stucco beach house, Hal’s debut album still vibrates with the aftershocks generated by Brian Wilson and Neil Young. Intricately orchestrated songs lower you into a swimming-pools-at-sunset lifestyle of mellow Laurel Canyon contemplation. A predictably retro muse, certainly, but at least Paul and David Allen, and keyboardist Stephen O’Brien, have enough songwriting firewater to spike The Thrills’ milky strumming. Hal – Hal, released 25 April 05 on Rough Trade.
