Guerrilla beats from the Brit rapper. M.I.A.'s machine-gun shot into the media glare could incite easy cynicism. Maya Arulpragasam oozes street cred with her troubled childhood during the Sri Lankan civil war (we like ‘em “real” right?) and her art school association with cool chicks Justine Frischmann and Peaches. But M.I.A.’s (Missing In Acton) Arular lives up to the hype. Brash, cheap, cut’n’paste noise mashes angular riddims, Adam Ant-style yowling, hip-hop rhyming and squawky, bendy synths into a sparse punk noise that’s part ‘ardcore rave, part hardcore politics and utterly bombastic.M.I.A. – Arular, released 18 April 05 on XL Recordings.
