The WWII-obsessed Brighton quintet’s second album. British Sea Power once threatened to do a Franz Ferdinand and retool post-punk for the pop mainstream. But imposingly windswept as it is, Open Season finds BSP still tethered to indiedom. Granted, It Ended On An Oily Stage summons the ghost of Joy Division, Be Gone is a deft Psychedelic Furs homage and The Land Beyond a dreamy Belle & Sebastian pastel-scape, but for all their Blitz spirit and lyrics about Wiltshire fields, they seem curiously incapable of transcending those admirable influences. British Sea Power - Open Season, released 04 April 05 on Rough Trade.
