Androgynous torch song melodrama from NYC. Surname-less Antony first turned heads as an extra in Lou Reed’s touring show, The Raven. But this, his combo’s second album, finds Antony’s tremulous, Nina-Simone-meets-Morrissey vocals unashamedly centre stage - cameos from Boy George, Rufus Wainwright and Reed himself notwithstanding. Against timeless cabaret piano arrangements, that golden larynx unfurls a succession of poignant, often raw elegies to friendship (You Are My Sister), gender “issues” (Bird Gurl) and masochism (Fistful Of Love), leaving no emotional stone unturned. High camp meets deep soul, in other words. Antony & The Johnsons - I Am A Bird Now, released 21 March 05 on Secretly Canadian.
