![]() knit 2 together: concepts in knitting
Knit happens at London’s Crafts Council. Knitting, let me assure you, is surprisingly hot in fashionable circles. But even if you’re a naysayer of the granny-friendly pursuit, the Craft Council’s first knitting exhibition in nearly two decades won’t fail to engage and entertain. The selection, from a range of international artists, focuses on work pushing “perceived boundaries within the world of knitting”. Highlights include Janet Morton’s Domestic Interior, a knitted lounge complete with cable-knit TV which questions the value we give objects. Kelly Jenkins’ wall hanging, Knit Uncensored, a giant magazine cover advertising stories such as “my knitted condom nightmare”, contrasts seedy imagery with the traditional feminine view of knitting. Marie-Rose Lortet’s Jacket For a Migrating Bird creates a sweet and funny narrative, while Andy Diaz Hope’s balaclavas of stereotypes, Everybody Is Somebody’s Terrorist, which allow people to assume alternate identities, toys with familiar domesticity and the dark symbolism of the ultimate terror-accessory. Taking our preconceptions in innovative directions, Knit 2 Together manages not to take itself too seriously, treading a delicate line from humorous to conceptual. Knit 2 Together: Concepts In Knitting is at the Crafts Council, London, until 08 May 05, after which it will tour the UK.
