The intense Scottish post-rockers’ BBC sessions. With a little help from John Peel’s patronage, Mogwai brought prog rock to the indie kids and perfected the “quiet, quiet, quiet, loud, very loud, quiet” model of guitar-driven instrumental catharsis. Although never known for their brevity, Mogwai don’t meander for the sake of it, as demonstrated on these tightly-plotted session versions of the finest tunes from their various studio albums and EPs. An essential companion for devoted Mogwai acolytes or an ideal introductory compendium for newcomers to their sonic cathedral. Mogwai – Government Commissions: BBC Sessions 1996-2003, released 21 February 05 on PIAS Recordings.
