Yeah, I am slow on the uptake, sorry. Her album “Let it die” came out last year and I have just got it, my bad, I apologise. Accepted? Feist’s voice is as crystal clear and dreamy as the streams in her native Canada (possibly not ALL of them but the ones I imagine in my head anyway…) When you play her album you feel as though she could be gently singing the words into your ear for the effortlessly sassy and soulful whisperings of “Gatekeeper”, “Let it Die” and “Now at Last” “Mushaboom” was the first single released into relative mainstream obscurity being caught on the “alternative” and “highly praised” eddies, to ripples from all the right people who were excited about the playful foot tapping, whistling and hand clapping that accompanied her impeccably balanced voice. “One Evening” was the song that reached out to me and stroked my cheek into a smile of amazed coyness making my pupils dilate as I went mushily into a doe eyed dream of first dates and kisses. It is reminiscent of a 60’s pop ballad with tenderness, space age synths and slow moving smiling funk. I bought the album on the strength of this song, and was happy I did because it also has the song “Inside and Out” on it. What can I say about her Bee Gee’s cover…. It is a stunningly crafted masterpiece that would have everyone on the dance floor throwing down shapes whilst also being able to be played in the boudoir as two people were intertwined in all the fun that two people can have, giggling and smiling with cheeky twinkles in their eyes. The beauty of this album is how simple it is. Described as a line drawing as opposed to a painting. There is almost nothing to “Lonely lonely” or “Now and Last” but her, already too highly praised by me, voice. But the other bits to the album are well though out, not overblown and without the added “drama” of over produced musical accompaniment. The album was put together from her whirlwind life of the past few years (she shared a flat with Peaches, was on tour with Gonzales and Broken Social Scene amongst other projects) by Feist, Renaud Letang and Gonzales in Paris. I for one am glad that they got together or else I wouldn’t have a new favourite album.
