A cinematic jazz treat from Southend-based producer. There’s a lot of challenging, innovative, clever music out there today. The sort of thing you can admire but rarely actually feel like listening to. Then something like this comes along. A laid-back, jazzy, mid-90s-style lounging album that, while hardly pushing the boundaries, is eminently listenable. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not naff noodly nu-jazz or anything, it’s darker and deeper than that. Like a more straightforward Cinematic Orchestra or a jazzed-up Kruder & Dorfmeister, or even a Portishead without Beth Gibbons. If you like them, you’ll certainly like this. Tom Tyler – Forward Going Backward, released 07 February 05 on DC Recordings.
