Folktronica for brainiacs. How times change. When Dylan “went electric” in 1966, he faced screams of “Judas!” from angry hippies. Nowadays it seems that no folk release is complete without a little electronic snap, crackle and pop. Softly-strummed acoustic guitars provide the last refuge for frazzled ex-ravers who have seen The Wicker Man too many times. The latest product of this beards ‘n’ boffins love-in is Tunng – a folk duo so brainy they have a song about Watson and Crick’s double-helix DNA model (Codebreaker). Elsewhere, Mother’s Daughter builds from a droning, glitchy intro into chiming picked guitar, while Tale From Black’s weave of plaintive vocal and crunchy samples is as attractive as the “folktronica” moniker is clumsy. Tunng – This Is…, released 31 January 05 on Static Caravan.
