![]() the triumph of painting
A change of mind for Saatchi? Charles Saatchi has done a tremendous job of advertising his own art collection over the past decade, and should be commended for a stunning marketing job. But since he’s taken over London’s County Hall - a space too big and misshapen to really work as a gallery – it has become clear that he’s not very good at hanging work, juxtaposing images and using space. Charles Saatchi is a bad curator. The Triumph Of Painting is the gallery’s 20th anniversary show, the first of three exhibitions lionizing painting. And there are some brilliant works in the collection – Marlene Dumas and Hermann Nitsch both stand out. But there are also some serious duds from nearly all of the six artists on display. Much of the exhibition feels like work bought when drunk at art openings in the 80s, now rediscovered and given some attention to raise their price tags. Saatchi’s triumph is an off-key kazoo rather than a regal fanfare. The Triumph Of Painting: Part One is at the Saatchi Gallery until 08 June 05.
